Our Story

StudioCork was founded in 2017 as a Cork Accessories Portuguese Brand. Manufacturing the handbags with artisans with more than 30 years of know-how in the cork sector. Sara Soares, one of the Co-Founders, worked as a Fashion Designer in the cork industry and since the beginning that brings a huge advantage to what is StudioCork today.

The main goal of this project is to spread “Cork” around the world as an alternative to genuine leather and also by giving a different approach to the Fashion World, providing trendy bags and wallets without compromising nature.

Why Cork?

Cork is the bark of the cork oak. It is a thick and spongy bark that can start to be carefully removed from the cork oak after 25 years of being born. It is necessary to wait 9 years, then another 9 years to remove it, to get a cork of sufficient quality to be used in the production of our cork handbags. From here, the tree can be stripped every 9 years but has already 43 years and this cork can be used to manufacture our cork handbags and wallets. Virgin cork, the second cork and all the cork that remains in the production of stoppers are also used, not in stoppers but in other products that can be made with crushed cork.

Reduce CO2 Emissions

Absorb 4.8 million tons of Co2 per year in Portugal alone.

Cork is a material that has guaranteed and must continue to guarantee the maintenance of the cork oak forest, one of the richest biodiversity ecosystems in the European continent and estimated to absorb 4.8 million per year. tons of CO2 per year (only in Portugal), one of the main gases that cause the greenhouse effect and the consequent global warming.

Cork is a natural material, it is 100% biodegradable and recyclable. And not only does much less energy be spent on the production of cork handbags and wallets compared to other fashion handbags on the market, but the exploitation of cork maintains cork oak forests that capture CO2 and still maintain biodiversity.
